Ségolène Royal will replace Laurent Fabius as president of the UN climate talks. The French environment minister will hold the position until the COP22 summit in Marrakesh, in November, according to press reports.
Top of her to do list will be driving the Paris Agreement through to ratification. To do this, at least 55 countries representing at least 55% of the world’s emissions have to put pen to paper.
In December, at COP21 in Paris, countries finally agreed on a deal to curb greenhouse gas emissions and prevent temperatures rising above two degrees.
Once the agreement is formally ratified by enough countries, the hard work starts: putting the plans into practice.
