Europe to come down hard on unhealthy food

It might be a case of too little, too late. A voluntary reformulation plan to push healthier food and reduce intake of ingredients like salt and sugar was endorsed by member states and the food industry this week.

The “roadmap for action on food product improvement” is light on detail and is unlikely to keep the European Commission at bay.

Health and food safety commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis told reporters this week that taxation, marketing, advertising, education and reducing access to unhealthy food are all on the table.

The UK is soon expected to reveal its plans on how to tackle childhood obesity. This could include a tax on sugary drinks.
