Manufacturers struggling with waste targets and allergy laws

Almost three quarters of food and drink manufacturers are assessing the environmental impact of their products.

The “State of the UK food and drink manufacturing sector” report, published by Food Manufacture magazine, also shows that only 52% of firms have met their carbon reduction targets in the past 12 months.

Only a third (33%) will be sending zero waste to landfill this year – which is down on the 36% in last year’s survey. The Food & Drink Federation has a target for members to send no waste to landfill by the end of 2015.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of manufacturers (85%) expected the government to introduce tougher regulation on the composition and marketing of high fat, salt and sugar foods.

Just over four in five (81%) said all their products are compliant with the Food Information for Consumers regulation, which came into force 18 months ago.
