Compass joins cage-free revolution

Compass Group has become the latest foodservice company to commit to sourcing 100% cage-free shell and liquid eggs.

The move brings the international business in line with Compass in the US, which has already made the commitment to source eggs from higher welfare systems.

Compass’s commitment is another coup for Compassion in World Farming, which has been pressing food businesses to go cage-free and rewarding good practice with its Good Egg Award.

The likes of Tesco, Aldi, Booker and Sodexo have all recently announced their intention to go cage-free, heaping pressure on other major purchasers of eggs to follow suit.

“Improving the welfare of farm animals is a key focus for our business and we’ve supported the sourcing of cage free eggs since 2009,” said Nicki Crayfourd, director of health, safety and environment for Compass Group. “This commitment marks the next step in our responsible sourcing journey and we look forward to continuing to work together with the Compassion in World Farming team who provide invaluable support and guidance.”
