This week’s eye-catching numbers feature concerns over UK agricultural productivity, warnings over climate inaction ahead of COP30, an opportunity for foodservice to serve more beans, and global success for a local bagel restaurant.
30:50:50. A group of MPs is urging the UK Government to embed its proposed 30:50:50 mission to increase agricultural output by 30% by 2050 while reducing farming’s environmental footprint by 50%. MPs from the All Party Parliamentary Group on Science and Technology in Agriculture warned in a new report that without urgent reforms to farming and land-use policies to enhance yields, domestic food production could decline by 32% by 2050.
2.5°C. On the eve of the COP30 climate summit in Belém, Brazil, a new UN Environment Programme (UNEP) report has warned that global climate progress has stalled. Even with all current pledges implemented, the world remains on track for up to 2.5°C of heating, far beyond the limits scientists say are safe. The UN has urged world leaders to increase the scale of their ambition and action during COP30 talks.
95%. A huge proportion of beans consumed in the UK is currently eaten inside the home. That’s according to The Food Foundation which says the low share of beans eaten outside of the home (just 5%) presents a big opportunity for the out of home sector to get more beans onto menus. This week, the charity launched a new campaign to boost UK bean consumption for which it is seeking business support.
1. A family-run restaurant in London has topped the list of Deliveroo’s global trending orders for 2025. Papo’s Bagels saw off competition from restaurants in Italy, UAE and France thanks to its Classic Bagel, which combines smoked salmon, cream cheese, sliced red onion, tomatoes, and capers. Deliveroo said the restaurant’s success “highlights how authentic, locally-run establishments can capture the appetite and love of a nation for new and trending dishes”.
