Case Study: How Nestlé is working with farmers to futureproof coffee supplies

In a bid to boost regenerative agriculture and create more resilient coffee farming practices, Nestlé has been working with coffee farmers to make lasting improvements.

Regenerative agriculture is the heart of the Nescafé Plan 2030, and last year the company trained more than 200,000 coffee farmers in 16 countries. As part of the Nescafé Plan, 1,400 field staff, including agronomists, worked with coffee farmers on programmes to develop regenerative practices. The scheme now covers more than 400,000 hectares, with 21 million coffee plantlets distributed in 2024, and a cumulative total of about 315 million since 2010.

The work is showing promising results. Last year, almost a third (32%) of green coffee came from farmers implementing regenerative agriculture practices (up from 25% in 2023) and 2024 saw 20-40+% lower GHG emissions per kg of green coffee assessed for most origins where primary data of GHG farming emissions was monitored, representing more than 30% of the company’s green coffee supplies.

By using regenerative agriculture, Nestlé believes farmers will be able to better adapt to the effects of climate change, while practices will also boost yields, help increase farmer income and reduce coffee’s carbon footprint.

Axel Touzet, senior vice president, head of Nestlé Coffee Brands Strategic Business Unit, said: “We have already surpassed our 2025 goal, with 32% of our coffee coming from farms practicing regenerative agriculture practices. We are now pushing towards our next goal of achieving 50% by 2030.

“We are already seeing that regenerative agriculture has the potential to deliver positive outcomes for coffee farmers, the environment and future growth for us as a business. This is the essence of what we call creating shared value, and it shows how we plan to continue working together with our partners, suppliers and farmers to help make your world a better one.”
