This week’s standout figures show hundreds of farms folding, a map of fishmeal factories, the new multi-million pound fund to reduce cow burps and a ‘clean’ plant-based burger aimed at foodservice.

2. The number of ingredients in Millow’s B2B burger offering. It is ‘clean label’, binder-free and made from oats and mycelium, reports Foodnavigator.com. The Swedish startup said it is working with foodservice companies to “understand what consumers want”. Plant-based alternatives are being challenged over the number of ingredients used and the level of processing involved in order to mimic meat.

805. Research from Cynergy Bank shows that just 805 new farm businesses were established in the first quarter of 2025, while 1,890 closed during the same period. That equates to a business health score of just 0.43 – meaning fewer than one new enterprise is replacing every two closures.

This is a record low for the sector and significantly trails behind the national average, according to the bank’s report.

506. Fish farming is big, big business and scale has brought scrutiny. One argument critics of industrial aquaculture make is that the fishmeal and fish oil used to make the feed for popular carnivorous species like salmon is not sustainably or ethically sourced. So, scientists have published the first-ever open-source map of fishmeal and fish oil factories around the world. They found 506 factories across 60 countries.

$27.4m. Led by Wageningen University, the Global Methane Genetics Initiative brings together 50 partners in 25 countries to better select livestock with naturally lower methane emissions. The scale of the investment reflects growing global pressure on agriculture to address the short-lived but powerful greenhouse gas, reports The Scottish Farmer.
