AS FOOD lovers gather in Glasgow this weekend for the annual BBC Good Food Show (18 – 20 October), the Love Food Hate Waste team are on hand to help tackle some of the 2.1 million tonnes of food wasted in Scotland every year.
With food waste topping the news agenda this week, the Love Food Hate Waste team will be back at the show again this year offering hints and tips on how people can make more of their leftovers, saving them money whilst helping the environment.
Visitors to the show will also be able to visit the Love Food Hate Waste Cookery Theatre where celebrity chefs including Tom Kitchin, Masterchef 2013 winner Natalie Coleman and writer and broadcaster Hardeep Singh Kohli, will be cooking up delicious meals using leftover ingredients.
Research from Zero Waste Scotland has found that households in Scotland could save as much as £35 a month by taking small steps to reduce food waste, through better planning of meals such as making a shopping list, and getting to know date labels. With every household in Scotland expected to have a food waste collection by 2016, even unavoidable food waste can be diverted from landfill and put to good use.
A commitment to waste reduction can also be seen across the show, with recycling bins provided throughout the SECC, and all exhibitors being asked to make a pledge to reduce, re-use and recycle where possible.
Ylva Haglund, Love Food Hate Waste, said:
“We’re delighted to be back at the BBC Good Food Show again, and to have great chefs lending their support this year.
“Visitors to the show are passionate about food, so it makes sense to try to make the best possible use of it, and throw away as little as we can.
“Throwing away food isn’t just a waste of money, it’s also a waste of the resources such as energy and water used to produce it. Taking steps to reduce this can really help the environment and help Scotland move towards becoming a zero waste society.”
