In this week’s Datapoint we look at M&S Cornflakes ingredients, NHS savings through a shift to more plant-based whole foods, extended producer responsibility for packaging rules and carbon savings from reducing a glass wine bottle.
One. Marks and Spencer’s cornflakes have only one ingredient. The retailer’s move to splash this across the front of the cereal box has caused a bit of a debate about simplicity versus fortification, and continued to stir the pot on UPFs.
£54.9m. What the NHS could save annually through a shift to more plant-based wholefoods like vegetables, pulses and legumes in UK hospital meals. These savings could then be partially reinvested in procuring more British food from SMEs and organic farmers, according to a briefing prepared by coalition of NGOs.
£2,000. The annual costs for large individual pubs under extended producer responsibility for packaging rules, according to UKHospitality. A number of pub groups this week wrote to Defra secretary Steve Reed to ask for packaging supplied to hospitality businesses to be exempt from pEPR.
96gCO2e. The carbon savings from reducing a glass wine bottle from the industry standard 550g to 420g – the benchmark in the Bottle Weight Accord signed by the likes of Naked Wines, Tesco and the Wine Society.
