Market volatility linked to geopolitical instability in the Middle East region has brought into sharp focus the food system’s ongoing reliance on fossil fuel based inputs. Farmers and their customers are bracing themselves for spikes in the price of oil, gas and fertiliser amid a tightening of supplies linked to the closure of the key Strait of Hormuz.

The situation has sparked renewed calls for farmers to transition to more regenerative farming techniques that reduce the need for fossil-fuel inputs, and for food businesses to support the transition with both financial and non-financial support. It’s also led to warnings from farming leaders that such a transition will not happen overnight.
